Sara smiled. Did not argue.

They talked for forty minutes. About nothing important. About everything comfortable. When Sara left she hugged Nadia over the counter and said they should have dinner soon and Nadia said yes and meant it.

She watched Sara walk out the door and down the street. The way she walked had always been different from the way Nadia walked. Like the pavement belonged to her. Like she had never once had to calculate whether she could afford to take a different route.

Nadia had always loved that about her. That confidence. That ease.

She went back to work.

Daniel came home that evening with takeout from the Thai place two blocks over. The cheap one. Plastic chairs. Handwritten menu. Not the one with good lighting that charged eight dollars for a spring roll.

It was a good night. The kind they had sometimes when the bills were not immediately due and the worry was background noise instead of the main thing. They ate on the couch. Daniel made her laugh twice about something that happened on the bus. She told him about Sara and the mysterious older man and he said Sara was too smart to get mixed up with someone like that.
